The SBMA system is a ground anchor solution in either permanent or temporary form with the ability to reduce the quantity of required anchors when compared to a more traditional solution.

This unique system, which was originally designed and developed by SBMA Ltd, has been used extensively on a world-wide basis for anchoring in soils and weak rock and can provide between double and treble the working load of normal ground anchors over lengths of 8 to 10 metres.

The system has demonstrated that in the majority of medium strength soils ultimate loads in the range of 250 to 400 tonne can repeatedly be achieved. The system also has the advantage of being appropriate for use in environments previously considered unsuitable for traditional ground anchors.

The principles of the system and its load transfer mechanism are acknowledged in BS8081 and the corrosion protection system adopted for permanent works is the simplest in concept yet the most reliable in practice.

The entire length of the steel members within the ground is isolated from the environment by two continuous layers of plastic, in addition to several supplementary layers of cementitious grout.

It is commonly accepted within the industry that the progressive debonding phenomenon associated with traditional ground anchor systems results in a reduction of anchor efficiency with an increase in fixed length.

SBMA’s investigations into this phenomenon established a large amount of data that allowed this reduction in efficiency to be accurately quantified, such that a correction factor can be introduced at the design phase of anchors in soils and weak rocks. More on Enhanced Anchor Performance – Click here.

The SBMA removable anchor is a totally removable anchor for temporary works where the entire length of prestressing strand is removed from the bore hole after use.
