Single Bore Multiple Anchor (S.B.M.A.) System

This award winning, patented system has been used extensively within the UK and overseas for anchoring in soils and weak rock. It generally provides double the efficiency in mobilisation of in-situ ground strength over normal fixed anchor lengths of 8 to10m. The system has demonstrated that in the majority of medium strength soils unltimate loads in the 250 to 400 tonne range can be repeatedly achieved. The principles of the system and its load transfer mechanism are acknowledged in BS8081 and the corrosion protection system adopted for permanent works is the simplest in concept yet the most reliable in practice. The entire length of the steel members within the ground is isolated from the environment by two continuous layers of plastic, in addition to several supplementary layers of cementitious grout.

The fact that each individual investigatory anchor, which has been tested to failure, identifies values of ultimate bond stress at the grout/ground interface in each of the multiple of anchors in the anchor borehole, has allowed extensive research into the influence of chosen fixed length on utilisation of soil strength. It is commonly accepted that the progressive debonding phenomenon results in a reduction in anchor efficiencey with increase in fixed length. However, it is the depth of data established from SBMA testing that has allowed this efficiency to be accurately quantified, such that a correction factor can now be introduced into the accepted formulae for the design of anchors in soils and weak rocks.

S.B.M.A.System Design Example

An example of a design for SBMAs based on "Procedures of Geotechnical Engineering Handbook - 2003" (Publisher Ernst & Sohn), written by Tony Barley and H. Ostermeyer, can be be downloaded as a .pdf file by clicking here.

Removable Single Bore Multiple Anchor (S.B.M.A.) System

A further refinement of the SBMA system enables a temporary anchor to be destressed when no longer required and for the complete removal of the anchor tendon from the borehole. An extract from "Procedures of Geotechnical Engineering Handbook - 2003" (Publisher Ernst & Sohn), written by Tony Barley and H. Ostermeyer, can be be viewed by clicking here.

A schematic layout for SBMA Removable anchors showing the details of the system is also available from that page.

Actively Stressed Soil Nail System

The Actively Stressed Soil Nail System provides the industry with a slope or face retention method that allows usage of a lightweight facing that itself may be retained by the soil in the resistant zone. It does not require heavy structural facing as required by prestressed ground anchors. Both the facing and the active soil mass are tied independently to the resistant zone of the soil mass.

At last the answer to those who have bandied around the term 'prestressed soil nail' has been made available to the Geotechnical Specialist.

A technical paper providing further information on this system can be viewed or downloaded here.

Real-time Remote Monitoring for Slopes

This new system, developed at a university in Korea, uses fibre optics to monitor movements in a slope. The results are transmitted to a computer where they can be remotely accessed and analysed in real time.

The patented system utilises optical fibre and other movement monitoring sensors in a wide variety of applications where real time monitoring of geotechnical structures is required. Instrumentation accuracy can accomodate changes in microstrain (optical fibre tehnology) or as little as 0.5mm for TRS Sensors used for slope monitoring.

SBMA Ltd have secured an exclusive License with Geotechnical Monitoring Group Ltd (South Korea) to market and implement the Real-Time Slope Monitoring System and related technologies. The license agreement covers Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and South Africa.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THE SINGLE BORE MULTIPLE ANCHOR SYSTEM

· THE SYSTEM ENHANCES ANCHOR CAPACITIES IN ALL DRILLED AND GROUTED BOREHOLES.

This results from the load transfer mechanism from the tendon.
· WORKING LOADS OF 1000 TO 2000KN ALREADY USED IN SOILS.

These working loads allow for a factor of safety of between 2 and 3, complying with the Code of Practice.
· SYSTEMS ALSO SUITABLE IN WEAK ROCKS.

SBMA anchors have been installed in mudstones, chalk, schists and weathered granite.
· OVER 60,000 SBMA PRODUCTION ANCHORS PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED AND TESTED SUCCESSFULLY.

These anchors have been installed over a 15 year period in UK, Austria, Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, Ireland, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia
· OVER 500 INVESTIGATORY UNIT ANCHORS TESTED TO RESEARCH ANCHOR PERFORMANCE IN A WIDE RANGE OF SOILS.

SBMA anchors have been installed in clays, silts, sands, gravels, boulder clays, glacial tills, chalk, mudstones, completely decomposed Granite, sand fill, rock and gravel fill and very weak Sandstones.
· ANCHOR TENDONS FULLY ISOLATED FROM THE ENVIROMENT FOR PERMANENT WORKS.

Full double corrosion protection in accordance with the Code of Practice. Reference can be made to the paper on 'double plastics' by Tony Barley.
· CORROSION PROTECTION COMPLIES WITH EXISTING CODES AND RECOMMENDATIONS.

Tony Barley was heavily involved with the development of protection systems. He was involved with the drafting of both BS8081 (1978 to 1983) and the Eurocode (1992 to 1996).
· COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN PACKAGE AVAILABLE.

The extensive data collected from test and production anchors has allowed considerable advancement in design. This has led to a change in the design package to include an efficiency factor.
· FOR TEMPORARY URBAN PROJECTS EQUALLY HIGH CAPACITY FULLY REMOVABLE ANCHORS MAY BE INSTALLED.

The removable anchors are all SBMA and gain all the benefits of multiple anchor systems.
· BOTH TENDON FIXED LENGTH AND FREE LENGTH TENDON ARE REMOVEABLE.

This is the only system which guarantees total removability. As a result of the tendon load transfer system there is no direct bond between the tendon and the grout.
· REMOVEABLE SYSTEM IS FULLY PROVEN: 60 MILES OF STRAND REMOVED FROM ONE CONTRACT ALONE.

Removable anchors have been installed in Edinburgh, London, Kent, Manchester, Leeds and in Austria, Hong Kong.
